Visiting Tanzania: Day 3

Not long after entering Tarangire National Park, we encountered our first family of elephants, and our luck continued so that within an hour or so we had seen an estimated 150-200 elephants.  We had to stop while they crossed the road more than once.  It was thrilling to see so many up close. So I'll minimize the commentary and just show a sample of photos.  Wish that blogspot supported videos with sound so you could capture the full sense of the moment

...entering the park..and on to the elephants...

I'd upload more videos if it didn't take so long, but on to the other animals in the park.

These 2 giraffes were competing (with their necks).

Time to check into the Sopa Lodge, and then on to lunch by the pool.

...also time to try the third Tanzanian beer, Safari.

...roughing it again.

Saw a couple of these strange little lizards crawling outside the room.

These little creatures, and a few monkeys, also populated the grounds.  This one was on the patio.

Went on an evening (4-6 pm) game drive in the park, known for its giant Baobab trees, known as the "tree of life" since it can survive dry seasons by shedding its leaves.  We had heard that leopards were sighted so we concentrated on the area where they were seen earlier that day.

And our luck continued.  We spotted these two leopards within a short distance of each other, which our guide said probably meant they were a "couple" since leopards do not like to share turf.

Outside patio in the bar area was a nice place to witness....

....the sunset on the third day.
