Discovering Qatar
My stop in Qatar was brief, to spend time chatting with an ol' friend from my days at the University of Minnesota, Chuck Whitney, and visiting the Northwestern University campus where he works. Since it was 110 degrees in the shade, we didn't spend a lot of time out doors, but we did visit a couple amazing museums and the lively night bazar for dinner. Felt like R&R from my trip in one sense.First, a couple photos of Qatar and then the campus and museums.

The Northwestern University Campus.....specializing in journalism and communication--and nearby structures.

We visited three museums, the Islamic Museum--fascinating structure, and three "house" museums that examine earlier eras of Qatar, the petroleum industry there, and, the most fascinating, slave trade in the Indian Ocean, a brave statement.
Wish I had video to illustrate the marvelous technology employed in this museum.
Inside the petroleum museum below.
The Bin Jelmood House museum lays out the slavery conducted by countries around the Indian Ocean. Most of the slaves were not Africans, but people from central Asia and elsewhere on the continent and Middle East. This is a history of which I was completely unaware.

Finally, the bazar at night.
just love signs....
