Discovering Kashgar on the Silk Road, on a 2016 Trip Around the World: Places and Spaces

Discovering Kashgar, China, on the Silk Road

Kashgar, China, was a delight for two reasons, the animal/livestock market and the old town, the latter being torn down rapidly.  Fortunately, we were there while a portion remains and the government decides whether or not to preserve it.  Earthquakes are the key problem.

First, the livestock market.  My father, Laurence Jeffres, would have loved this part of my blog.  Hope he sees it.

These are called "fat tailed" sheep, but "fat butt" would be more accurate.

The Old Town...that Survives....

Because of earthquakes, the government is tearing down the old mud structures and replacing them with more endurable structures.  But the old labyrinth is much more interesting, so I hope they preserve some of it.  Here's what we witnessed in the surviving old town.

...an area being destroyed in old town....

This shop literally looks out over the park area next to the old city because the walls have been torn down on this upper level.

These girls were selling deep fried noodles...which were delicious.

This shop sold old communist icons that have been abandoned, from Stalin to Mao.

A couple of artisans as we left the old town.

New "Old Town"

The newly area built for artisans and residents displaced in the old mud and stick structures being demolished was also interesting, and, no doubt, more stable in earthquakes, but not authentic. Still....

Kashgar City

We also visited a Uyghur mosque and cemetery and walked through other parts of the city.  And our hotel was an interesting place.  First, the mosque.

A couple shots of our interesting hotel and the city, including dinner.

A typical street in the downtown area of Kashgar.

We dined at a very nice restaurant in Kashgar.
